As many as 20 per cent of motorcycles have some hidden flaw, bike insurance customers have been warned.

According to the HPI, driving on two wheels as opposed to four leaving motorists just as vulnerable to crime and many bikes have a history their owners know nothing about.

Nicola Johnson, consumer services manager for the HPI, said: "Summer is always a popular time to buy a motorbike."

She added that with the current economic downturn and the rise in motoring costs, bikes may be even more popular in 2009.

"Sadly there is a false impression amongst consumers that they are not exposed to the same risks associated with used cars when buying a bike," Ms Johnson added.

The bike expert concluded that these vehicles are at greater risk of certain frauds than their four-wheeled counterparts.
HPI research found that more than 139,000 new motorbikes and mopeds were registered in 2008 in the UK, but one in ten bikes checked by the organisation still had outstanding finance on them.

Furthermore, bikes are more commonly declared insurance write-offs than other vehicles and in 2008 there was a five per cent increase in motorcycles that had undergone this process only to appear back on the road.

The HPI advises bike insurance customers considering a new vehicle to conduct their viewings during the daytime and to look out for signs of clocking, which distorts the true mileage value.
