Bike insurance customers taking their motors abroad this summer have been advised to read up on the regulations in the countries they are visiting.

The Backpackers Ultimate Guide (Bug) has stressed the importance of undertaking this research for safety reasons and for legal protection against prosecution for breaching regulations riders are unaware of.

According to Tim Uden, a managing editor at the Bug, the key difference between riding a bike in the UK and Europe is driving on the left side of the road.

He said that navigating left turns and roundabouts can be particularly hazardous for motorbike insurance policy holders not used to driving on the other side of the road.

"It only takes a couple of days to get used to driving on the right-hand side, but during those first few days you will need to [pay] extra attention while driving," Mr Uden advised.

Bike riders were also urged to ensure they have the right documents on them when on foreign roads, such as their full licence and international permit, if necessary.

In some countries motorists will also need to have their bike insurance documents with them while riding and be able to present them if pulled over by the local authority.
