Bike insurance customers confused over garage charges, research shows.
Bike insurance customers and other motorists are frequently baffled by the bills presented to them by garages, it has been revealed.

Research conducted by Motor Codes, the self-regulatory body for the automotive sector, found that 20 per cent of motorists had been charges more than a garage originally estimated when they took their vehicle in.

Chris Mason, director of Motor Codes, said: "There are no defined set of rules that covers anything from a franchise dealership to a sole trader operation so customers are confused and their expectations vary."

He said this meant that many motorists end up not knowing what to expect when they hand over the keys to their vehicles, causing difficulty and confusion.

The organisation's study found that 12 per cent of motorists believe they have been overcharged and that ten per cent are suspicious that non-existent problems had been created to make the bill more expensive.

Another 13 per cent had been baffled by jargon but 70 per cent of motorists had no idea how to raise an official complaint against a garage.

Mr Mason said: "We need to start basing the transaction on a no surprises basis so that the price agreed in the morning when the vehicle is dropped off is the same on collection."
