A new safety campaign to protect the wellbeing of motorcyclists has been launched online.
Spearheaded by the Driving Standards Agency, the organisation is using social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to promote its Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS), which helps bikers develop their riding skills.
As an additional incentive, riders who complete the scheme should be entitled to a discount on their bike insurance.
Trevor Wedge, chief driving examiner and director for Safer Driving at the DSA, commented that motorcyclists account for a fifth of fatal or serious injuries on the road, despite making up just one per cent of traffic.
"This is a terrible statistic, but we believe that further training can help to reduce this casualty rate by giving riders more knowledge about how to protect themselves on the roads," he stated.
Under the ERS scheme, riders undergo assessment by a qualified trainer and then embark upon a tailored training course to help them improve their skills - potentially also helping avoid bike insurance claims.
The DSA has also set up a microsite to promote the initiative, allowing visitors to get to know different types of bikers and learn about becoming safer on the roads.
