The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced that it is to increase funding for street lighting.
Some £440 million is to be invested in a scheme to enable local authorities modernise their street lighting, which may be good news for bike insurance customers.
The funding, revealed by transport minister Sadiq Khan, will be available through an application for Private Finance Initiative credits.
Cyclists may be pleased to hear that safety is a top priority of the scheme, which may impact on bike insurance.
"Good quality street lighting improves road safety and reduces crime and the fear of crime," Mr Khan said.
"This funding will help to create safer and healthier local communities by promoting social inclusion and more sustainable patterns of transport such as cycling and walking," he added.
Some communities in the UK have taken to switching off their street lights in a bid to save money, according to the BBC.
Ceredigion council is the second council in mid Wales, along will Powys, to opt for turning off its street lamps, which will be switched off during the night for a trial period between August this year until March 2010.
