Police have teamed up with a firm to implement a new system to track down stolen bikes - and it is already proving successful.
TRACKER is a UK-based firm enlisted by the force to help recover bikes and cars which have been illegally seized and this week the collaborative team traced a pizza delivery scooter nabbed by quick-fingered thieves.
Sergeant Rob Squire from the Metropolitan Road Policing Unit said: "The bike appeared to have been used for off-roading and had probably been moved around by a van over a number of days, crossing between the different counties."
He added that despite being hidden in a thick area of woodland the police and TRACKER managed to find and return it to the owner.
The vehicle was found largely owing to the fact it had been fitted with a TRACKER device, something bike insurance customers may consider installing on their own two-wheeled vehicles.
Stuart Chapman, TRACKER's police relationships manager, said that thieves should be aware that the device is now fitted to many motorbikes and that by using high frequency technology more stolen vehicles are being found.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that Brits are not shying away from taking out insurance against events like theft in the recession.
A survey conducted by moneysupermarket.com found that motorists are still committed to motorbike insurance and car insurance.
