While sales of motorcycles have fallen recently, the reasons for switching to two wheels remain strong, it has been claimed.

Amid the economic downturn, sales of powered two-wheelers dropped by more than a quarter in July, compared with the same month in 2008.

The figures from the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) highlight that total registrations of bikes for the seven months of this year are down by 16.8 per cent.

But the MCI's Sheila Rainger commented that the reasons for taking up motorcycling remain as strong as ever.

"Riding a motorcycle is one of the most cost-effective ways to travel, and provides a unique combination of fun, freedom and convenience," she said.

Both the top selling bikes in July were 125cc models - the Yamaha YZF R125 and the Honda CBF 125M, highlighting a trend towards smaller-engined machines that are learner legal.

The MCI has launched its Get On campaign to promote the benefits of travelling on two wheels and encourage non-riders to consider taking up motorcycling.

Under the campaign, consumers interested in motorcycling can have a free try-out session on a 125cc geared motorcycle or an automatic scooter; even they do not have a licence.
