Motorists have been warned that cutting back on the maintenance of their vehicle during the credit crunch could be a mistake in the future.
The Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF) issued the advice, which applies to those driving vehicles with two wheels as well as four, noting that letting bikes or cars fall into a bad state could cause an accident.
Riders may note that having an accident could mean they have to claim on their bike insurance policies, which may lead to hikes in their premiums.
Alex Wells, press officer at the RMIF, said: "It's always best to make sure your [vehicle] is properly maintained at all times and make sure that it undergoes regular servicing.
"In the long run this will actually save you money because any small problems will be picked up before they become large problems, which is usually when they become expensive."
Earlier this month, research conducted by moneysupermarket.com revealed that while motorists are trying to budget during the recession there are some expenses associated with being on the road which they realise can not be cut back on.
The majority of those surveyed said they would not be down-scaling their insurance premiums for driving and riding bikes or cover on their home contents.
Mr Wells advised motorists that there are ways they can ensure their money goes further, when investing in their vehicle.
He said: "The best thing that they can do is to make sure they go to a reliable garage that's a member of the RMIF, who will be able to give them support and advice on keeping their car on the road and not costing them too much."
