A new crash barrier has been installed in County Durham to make riding the roads safer for bike insurance customers in the region.
According to the RAC, most barriers are designed to cater for crashes involving cars, vans and trucks, but as a result can be deadly for motorcyclists.
One reason why such barriers can kill those riding a bike is that their vehicle may not be fitted with an airbag or crumple zone, meaning they collide directly with the safety feature.
The new barriers on the A689 road, close to the entrance to Killhope Lead Museum in upper Weardale, have been designed with motorbike insurance customers in mind.
More of these new products are planned to be fitted in the region.
A police spokesman confirmed that new ways to ensure motorbike riders' safety are still being researched, with special padding on road signs and crash-prone lampposts one move being considered.
The authority is also looking into ways to make drainpipes and manholes less slippy.
One lady who appears to not be put off by the perils of riding a motorbike is 80-year-old Doris Roberts, who got on a bike for her most recent birthday, reports the Daily Post.
