Motorcyclists are being urged to remember that bikes are just as vulnerable to criminal scams as other vehicles, after 25,000 machines were stolen in the UK last year.

Vehicle data firm HPI has revealed that one in five motorbikes has a "hidden past" and is now warning bikers to be on their guard for scams that could see them purchase a previously stolen machine.

Nicola Johnson, consumer services manager at HPI, commented that research by the firm has shown bikers to be less likely than car buyers to perform vehicle history checks.

"The fact is bikes are at even greater risk of certain frauds than cars," she warned.

According to the firm, a tenth of bikes still have outstanding finance on them, leaving innocent buyers at risk of either losing the machine or having to pay the bill.

Bike cloning is also an issue because the chassis number is not concealed under the vehicle's bodywork, allowing criminals easy access to the information.

"It is worrying to see that there remains a false impression amongst consumers that buying a bike is less risky than a car," Ms Johnson added.

Vehicle security firm Tracker recently revealed that it recovered £300,000 worth of stolen bikes last year.
