Motorists looking to trade in an old bike for a newer model have been advised to keep their current broker involved but to shop around for the best deal.

Insuring a newer bike can be considerably more expensive than an older model and while sticking with their current provider may seem like an easy option, it could cost riders financially in the long-term, says the Detroit News.

"Rates vary greatly from company to company," adds the newspaper. "A local independent insurance agent can help find the right mix of companies, policies and rates for you."

It stresses that insurance premiums can vary vastly for new and old bikes, as models that have done less miles may be less prone to breaking down and being involved in accidents.

Other tips given to those seeking bike insurance included being up front with insurers as soon as they buy a new vehicle and scouring the market for discounts on policies.

Earlier this month, security firm Tracker advised bike insurance customers that no matter how new or expensive their vehicle is it is still susceptible to theft.

It advocated employing several different security methods to ensure that thieves do not find nicking off with their bikes an easy job.
