Motorcycling holidays in the UK can be a convenient way of seeing more of the country while avoiding the credit crunch, experts have suggested.

Following the publication of data showing that while Britons ride out of the country in their droves, nowhere near as many bikers enter the UK for a break on their machine.

Findings by the Motor Cycle Industry (MCI) highlight that 100,000 people travel out of the UK by bike on board ferries or via the channel tunnel every year.

But less than a quarter of the number of potential bike insurance customers ride in from Europe.

The organisation states that if the UK could attract the same number of riders into the country as those who leave for their holidays, more than £30 million in tourism could be generated every week.

Spokesperson for the MCI Sheila Rainger commented that the country is currently attracting a very low percentage of European motorcyclists.

"Holidaying by bike is an excellent way of seeing more of the UK's tourist attractions and stunning scenery at your own convenience.

"It contributes a significant amount to local and national tourism and now is a good time for the UK to try and open this up to markets further afield."

According to analysis by the MCI, bikers currently contribute around £400 million to the UK's tourist economy, making them a lucrative market to tap.

The group discovered that 84 per cent of the country's bike riders enjoy taking their machine for a holiday, short break or day trips, even though most of them also have access to a car.

A quarter of motorcyclists said that their bike is their preferred mode of transport for days out in the UK, while one in six riders said they take their machine for short breaks.

Of those questioned, one in 15 said they opt to ride by bike for their holiday, with bikers spending an average of £68 per day on accommodation, entertainment and eating.

"As a destination venue, motorcycle tourism is increasingly important," commented Mark Wilsmore of Ace Cafe London.

The venue provides a place for bikers to meet, eat and show off their bikes. It also provided the setting for the 1964 film The Leather Boys.

"At the cafe we ensure that we give riders a reason to get out and enjoy riding their bikes and visit us," Mr Wilsmore added.
