Motorcycles help more people to get to work than other means of transport, a survey has shown.
Analysis of the National Travel Survey by the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCI) has shown that more than half of all motorbike journeys last year were made by Britons getting to work.
The figure of 52 per cent compares with 34 per cent of all bicycle trips made by people commuting to work and 22 per cent of all car journeys.
According to the MCI, the findings challenge suggestions that bikers can be a nuisance on the road and are mainly interested in using their machines for leisure pursuits.
MCI Spokesperson Sheila Rainger commented: "Motorcycle and scooter riders are capitalising on the cost-effective, practical benefits of using a powered two-wheeler during some of the busiest times of the day."
She went on to urge the government and employers to remember the contribution motorcycles make in getting workers to the office quickly and more cheaply than some of their colleagues.
"Cheaper parking, secure and covered parking and access to bus lanes are just some of the small steps that will improve a biker's experience," Ms Rainger added.
Recent figures have also highlighted that Britons could be joining savvy bike insurance policyholders by investing in learner legal, small-engined machines, that have lower running costs than their larger counterparts.
