Well-known biker Russell Crowe was recently spotted atop his machine for a challenge he pitched with a gossip columnist.

Writing recently in Sydney's The Daily Telegraph, columnist Annette Sharp commented on the thespian's apparent love of unhealthy snacks and habits when he was spotted pausing during a bike ride to smoke and wolf down some tacos.

The actor was riding his machine with his personal trainer at the time.

Crowe then got in touch with the writer and challenged her to a bike ride. According to the paper, his spokesman called up and said: "Get on your bike. Russell wants you to go riding with him. Are you ready to die?"

So the pair met up for a 12-mile ride throughout the city, with a video of the meeting showing the writer struggling to keep up with Crowe.

She may have had to invest in bike insurance for the ride, which was potentially necessary when she fell off her machine.

Nonetheless, the actor told the columnist: "You're twice the man Baz is," in reference to movie director Baz Luhrmann, a fellow biker.

In recent months, Crowe has been seen to have noticeably slimmed down for his role as the sheriff of Nottingham in director Ridley Scott's new Robin Hood film.
