More than 10,000 motorcyclists descended on north Wales on Sunday (September 12th) in protest at what they described as "heavy handed" policing, it has been reported.

The rally was prompted by biking magazine Motorcycle News (MCN), a publication currently campaigning against allegedly unfair arrests of riders in the area.

Jeff Stone, from the British Motorcyclists' Federation, told the BBC: "Ordinary, everyday motorcyclists just going for rides on the beautiful roads of north Wales find themselves harassed by police."

He described the policy of stopping riders as comparable to "using a sledgehammer to crack a peanut".

Meanwhile, local police have defended the decision to continue stopping motorcyclists, saying it has saved hundreds of lives.

Around 5,000 bikers, who could include bike insurance customers, met on the Horseshoe Pass in Llangollen while a further 3,000 gathered at the Dragon's Rest Cafe near Caerwys, say estimates.

MCN claims 10,000 riders finally converged at the last meeting point in Betws-y-Coed in Snowdonia National Park, filling the area with bikes.

One attendee described the day as being "like the TT, Bol d’Or and BMF Show rolled into one."
