Riders are being urged to do their bit for the environment by publicising how motorbikes and scooters can help roads become less congested and cities less polluted.

According to the Motorcycle Industry Association the green advantages of two wheels "are clear" as they offer reduced C02 emissions, avoid riders getting stuck in queues, halve journey times and take up half the space of a car.

The association suggests that rather than simply asking people to walk more, the industry should take a more "realistic view" of travel habits as a recent National Travel Survey revealed one quarter of those questioned said they never walk for 20 minutes or more.

It touts motorbikes and scooters as the "perfect halfway house between car travel and bicycling, offering personal, flexible travel at a lower environmental cost than the car, while being a more achievable alternative than walking or cycling".

Spokesperson for the group Sheila Rainger added: "Motorbikes, mopeds and scooters offer a practical, cost-effective alternative to the car for those who can't or won't cycle or walk."

Her comments come ahead of the start of European Mobility Week, beginning tomorrow (September 16th).

Backed by the European Commission, the week aims to promote sustainable transport for the continent's cities.
