Bike insurance policyholders in Bedfordshire may get a surprise next time they take to the streets if they catch a glimpse of two new luminous machines being utilised by their local road safety officers.

Bedfordshire and Luton Casualty Reduction Partnership has taken receipt of two highly visible bikes in a bid to cut the number of motorcyclists fatally wounded or injured on the area's roads.

"Getting these bikes is an important milestone for the project. They will help us continue to raise awareness of motorcycle safety, deliver road safety messages and promote ongoing training to motorcyclists," project leader Simon Deards told LutonToday.co.uk.

He added that the number of bikers losing their lives in the area is cause for concern.

The machines were bought with money from the Department for Transport's Road Safety Partnership Grant scheme.

Back in 2006, manufacturer Yamaha announced it would launch a mini bike finished with a luminous coating that can be charged by keeping it outside during daylight hours.

The model aimed to highlight the machine's technological appeal but could also provide a number of safety benefits for bike insurance policyholders who own the model.
