Motorbike manufacturer Ducati has beaten off competition from the likes of Harley Davidson and Piaggio to come top in a list of the UK's coolest bikes.

Heading up the motorbike category, Ducati came in at number 23 overall on the annual CoolBrands list.

Apple's touch-screen iPhone has overtaken prestige car maker Aston Martin to claim first place in the 500 products and companies that people most want to have or use.

Selection for the list is done independently and administered by the Centre for Brand Analysis.

A council of experts, including designer Ben de Lisi and lifestyle journalist Damian Barr, rates each entrant - drawn from blogs, sector reports and other sources - out of ten.

The lowest scoring 40 per cent are then eliminated before turning over the voting to the public.

Experts and consumers are given a list of criteria to bear in mind, including style, innovation, originality, authenticity, desirability and uniqueness.

Located in Bologna, Italy, Ducati has been producing motorbikes for more than 50 years.

The firm currently supplies bikes to more than 60 countries, from the stripped-down Monster range to the high-tech Superbike models.
