Most bike insurance customers would like to see the motorway speed limits on UK roads increased, says new research.

According to the poll, 92 per cent of the 2,000 bikers surveyed by motoring firm Swinton said that the current limit was too low.

Of those who agreed there should be a change, 45 per cent said the new maximum should be raised to 80mph.

Just over one in five (21 per cent) think it should be increased to 90mph, while a confident 16 per cent placed their ideal boundary at 100mph.

Almost ten per cent of respondents said they hoped for the introduction of European-style autobahns with no speed restrictions at all.

The results, however, differed for A-roads, with 68 per cent reportedly happy with the current 60mph restriction.

Most also felt that 30mph was a suitable limit for residential areas, although 11 per cent suggested it could be reduced to 20mph.

Figures from the Department for Transport suggest that Britain has one of the best road safety records in the world, with numbers of fatalities below those in France, Germany and Spain.
