A 17-year-old from Forsbrook has secured his first championship title and is set to compete at national level, it has been reported.

According to This is Staffordshire, Richard Wardle finished off an impressive season by taking third place in Sunday's Darley Moor Club's Formula 600 Championship race, claiming the overall title for the 600cc class.

Bike insurance customers may have been among those who saw the former Cheadle High School pupil end the campaign on 94 points, six ahead of his main rival, Nottingham's Tom Fisher, claims the news service.

Shortly after finishing the 12-lap race in a time of 11 minutes and 51 seconds, Mr Wardle said the battle had been "pretty nerve wracking".

"I knew I needed to finish fifth and I wanted to get a good practice time in so I could put pressure on everyone else," he told the local news source.

When not racing, he spends much of his time working at Bikerz Motorcycles in Hanley, as part of an apprenticeship to become a motorcycle technician.
