Reports that road accidents could rise by as much as 15 per cent this month may encourage bike insurance customers and other motorists to exercise a little more caution.

According to accident management firm Accident Exchange, heavy rain combined with falling leaves and greasy road surfaces means riding conditions in autumn can be especially treacherous.

The firm expects the number of reported accidents this month to increase by 15 per cent compared to the last six months and 21 per cent from August.

In addition, figures from the Department for Transport also indicate a 14 per cent rise in numbers of crash fatalities during October of last year.

Commenting on the predictions, Gordon Grant, a spokesperson for the accident specialist, said: "Unfortunately, it seems drivers are not immediately modifying their driving styles to suit the autumnal weather.

"October delivers some of the worst driving conditions of the year as the weather changes and the clocks go back, but drivers continue as if they were in the summer months. Motorists need to remember the basic laws of physics and common sense when the conditions under tyre change."
