Green-minded bike insurance policyholders might want to trade in their old model for a new zero-emissions offering from firm e-motive.

The company has announced the launch of three electric scooters into the UK market, run on a combination of electric motor and battery technology.

Models e1, e3 and e5 are exempt from road tax and can cost from 1p per mile to run.

Paul Williams, managing director of the firm, said the company is "thrilled" to be making electric vehicles a real option for the general public.

"Until now the drawbacks associated with owning electric vehicles meant they have been reserved for the most committed environmentalists," he said.

"But the reliability, rideability and all-round consumer package that comes with these scooters finally makes owning and running a zero-emissions vehicle affordable, supremely practical and desirable."

Mr Williams went on to say that the combination of low running costs, green credentials and long-range travel ability would make the vehicles appealing to those who are fed up with the inflexibility of the daily commute.

Prices for the models start from £2,249, with the top e5 offering boasting a top speed of 66mph and a price tag of £3,999.
