Britons planning a booze cruise across the Channel this Christmas are being warned that any speeding offences they commit abroad could follow them back home.

Under a new European treaty, Britons who speed while overseas can now have their offences pursued when they return home.

Coming into force this month, the scheme will see the government fine bike insurance policyholders who commit offences on behalf of the country in which the crimes were committed.

Bikers could also find they receive penalty points on their licence.

"With almost 1,400 known speed camera sites in France alone, it is no wonder that more than half a million British motorists are flashed by French roadside cameras each year," comments James Flynn OBE, chief executive officer of auto device firm RoadPilot.

"Many of those caught speeding would have been travelling on unfamiliar roads, making it all-too-easy to creep over the limit."

RoadPilot currently produces gadgets that can identify more than 22,000 speed camera locations across 19 countries, which may help bike insurance policyholders avoid being accidentally caught out on foreign roads.

It recently emerged that France is to trail a new type of speed camera that does not flash and blends in with its surroundings. The cameras are set to be installed in the UK over the coming 18 months.
