Bike insurance policyholders may be excited to read that Norton motorcycles are to begin rolling off the production line in Derby after an almost 20-year UK production absence.

The first models have been manufactured at the firm's Castle Donington factory and Norton has said it may be able to produce more than 100 machines every month, the Derby Telegraph reports.

Entrepreneur Stuart Garner, chief executive of Norton Motorcycles, told the publication: "We are building bikes now. The first bike will be delivered in two weeks' time."

The 111-year-old brand was owned by US businessman Ollie Curme until last year.

Meanwhile, motorcycle insurance policyholders in attendance at the forthcoming International Motorcycle and Scooter Show 2009 will be able to catch a glimpse of the company's 961 Commando and Cafe Racer Commando models when they are unveiled at the event.

"The progress the company has made over the past year has been awesome. We are well ahead of where the business plan said we would be," Mr Garner went on to say.

Norton will also be showcasing its NRV588 Rotary race bike at the event. Mr Garner recently logged over 180mph atop the machine at the Bonneville Salt Flats in the USA for a 173mph average run.
