Bikers who ride illegally on public footpaths are facing a crackdown by police in Birkenhead.
Local residents have raised concerns about bikes being used in an anti-social manner around the Noctorum and Prenton areas and police have been drafted in to deal with the troublemakers, the Wirral Globe reports.
The riders, who potentially risk more than a bike insurance claim by rising on areas not designated as off-road, face having their machines crushed if they are caught.
Officers and the council stipulate that public footpaths are not designated areas for motorbikes to be ridden and there is currently no common land that can be used for the pastime.
The local authority is now taking steps to erect signs along public footpaths to indicate to bikers that the walkways are not for machines.
Earlier this month, ChroniceLive.co.uk reported that youths had been caught illegally riding mini-motorbikes around the Gateshead area.
Police teamed up with the council to break up a notorious joyriding route with barriers, the publication reported.
Inspector for the Gateshead East neighbourhood team Michael Robson commented: "We want this to be a warning to all those considering riding bikes illegally.
"You will be caught, you will be prosecuted and your bike will be crushed."
