A new book highlights the continued appeal of the Cafe Racer-style machine, since its creation in the 1950s.

Bike insurance customers may be among those keen to trace the history of the legendary bikes: from Friday night dices on London's North Circular road, through the street specials craze of the 1970s, right up to the modern day revival.

Published by motoring specialist Veloce Publishing, the book is the latest addition to the firm's Those Were the Days series.

Previous volumes include a book exploring the history of British police cars and a study of Anglo-American cars from the 1930s to the 1970s.

According to the book's publishers, the Cafe Racer style encapsulate the essence of motorcycling "with its stripped-to-the-bone styling and a timeless blend of cat-quick chassis, matched to a barn-storming engine".

Written by Alistair Walker, The Cafe Racer Phenomenon is priced at £9.99 and available in bookshops nationwide or through Veloce's website.

Sample chapter topics include interviews with veteran bike builders such as Norman Hyde, an overview of unique prototypes and specials and the bikes and people of the Ace Cafe London today.
