Proposals to improve safety and skills levels for motorcyclists have been announced by the government today (November 11th).

The measures also aim to reduce risk for bus and lorry drivers, or new drivers planning to tow trailers from their vehicle.

Under the new legislation, the two current classes of motorbike will be replaced with three - A1 (up to 125cc), A2 (up to 35Kw) and A (above 35Kw), with new rules introduced for riders of larger machines.

Bike insurance customers hoping to progress to a more powerful ride will have to take an advanced driving test, with the minimum age for riding larger bikes with no experience rising from 21 to 24.

Other drivers will be affected by more frequent licence renewals and medical fitness tests for bus drivers aged more than 45.

Commenting on the proposals, Rosemary Thew, chief executive of motorist testing body the Driving Standards Agency, said it was hoped the changes would remind drivers to brush up on their biking or motoring skills.

"It's important that everyone has the skills they need to drive or ride safely," she noted.
