Father Christmas ditched the traditional reindeer and sleigh for one seasonal visit and took to two wheels, it has been reported.

According to the Sunderland Echo, the red and white-suited Santa arrived atop a 1920 Matchless Model W to switch on the Beamish Museum's Christmas lights.

An open-air museum aiming to recreate life in the north-west in the 19th and early 20th-century, the attraction is located near the town of Beamish in County Durham.

The biker Saint Nick drove from Chester-le-Street to the museum's Edwardian town, before making his final stop at the fireside grotto at Pockerly Waggonway, claims the local newspaper.

His arrival marked the beginning of the museum's programme of festive activities, which runs until January 3rd 2010.

During the celebrations organisers say Beamish's town and pit village will be transformed into a magical winter wonderland, with Christmas delicacies, handmade gifts, mulled wine and magic lantern shows.
