The UK's top-ranked motorbike racer was forced to take to two wheels when she nearly missed an appointment with the Queen.

Maria Costello, 32, had to resort to the familiar mode of transport in order to make it to Buckingham Palace on time to receive an MBE.

The Northampton-based racer had no qualms about riding to the palace, despite already being dressed up for the royal occasion.

The Isle of Man TT five times record holder was awarded the honour in recognition of her achievements and services to the sport.

Speaking shortly after the ceremony, Ms Costello told the Press Association she enlisted the help of Virgin taxi bikes after getting stuck in traffic.

With no time to change into her leathers, she rode on the back of her ride in a neatly-pressed suit and strings of pearls.

She told the newswire she was grateful to her parents and sister for attending alongside her: "This is the payback for what I put them through - all my injuries. It's not a regular thing having a daughter who rides a motorbike."
