Ireland urges training for bikers
Irish bikers are being urged to take a professional rider training course.
On the eve of the Motorbike and Scooter Show at Dublin's RDS, the National Safety Council (NSC) has published figures showing that motorbikes are involved in around 12 per cent of all the country's road fatalities.
This is in spite of the fact that they represent fewer than two per cent of all the vehicles on the road at any one time.
Most collisions between cars and motorbikes occur when a car emerges into the path of oncoming bikers, but the NSC is calling on motorbike riders to play their part in reducing road accidents too.

"From research carried out at previous motorbike and scooter shows the NSC estimates that as many as seven out of ten bikers have never received basic riding lessons," a spokesperson told Ireland On-line.
"Acquiring the right skills through proper training will equip a motorcyclist with the knowledge and expertise to ride a motorbike safely."
Another benefit is that cheap motor bike insurance can be even cheaper if the motor bike insurance company offers a discount for evidence of training.
A training course shows the motor bike insurance broker you are likely to be a more responsible rider than the average, which will be reflected in the premiums you pay.
Irish bikers will also get their first glimpse of the BMW Motorrad R1200 GS Adventure at this weekend's show.
