New figures on the number of casualties on Scotland's roads have led to calls for more motorists to undertake training in order to improve their skills.

Official statistics have revealed that a substantial number of fatal accidents are caused by driver failures such as losing control of the vehicle and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has suggested one way to cut the number of bike insurance claims being made would be to increase training offered to riders.

Kathleen Braidwood, RoSPA's road safety officer for Scotland, said: "These detailed road casualty figures show that driver or rider errors are the most commonly cited factors in reported road accidents in Scotland."

She continued: "They highlight a real need to promote a lifelong learning approach to training for drivers and motorcyclists."

Motorcyclists and drivers have also been warned recently to take greater care when driving in bad weather.

The UK has been battered by heavy rain and strong gusts of wind in recent weeks and motorists are being told to take greater caution when driving in order to reduce the risk of being involved in an accident.
