The Motorcycle Industry (MCI) has announced plans to get more Britons on their bikes at the opening of the Bike Show event in Birmingham.

Chief executive of the organisation Steve Kenward has outlined a number of measures the industry hopes will attract more riders to the pastime, creating growth and helping government figures recognise the importance bikers play within the economy.

Among the areas mentioned by Mr Kenward is the plan to increase rider numbers through the Get On campaign, which provides consumers with the chance to have a free taster session on a motorbike under professional supervision.

Boyband member Shane Lynch recently announced his support for the campaign.

According to the MCI, 80 per cent of people who opt for the exercise go on to take their compulsory basic training.

Mr Kenward said the MCI is also looking to work in partnership with other bodies to establish safety legislation, which could help riders avoid bike insurance claims in the future.

"We are encouraging new people to recognise the benefits of individual mobility that a powered two-wheeler affords," he said.

"We are also working to persuade the government that motorcycles and scooters are part of the solution to the transportation, congestion and environmental issues that face the country."

The Bike Show runs until December 6th.
