Motorbike insurance policyholders taking their bikes to a famous beauty spot in Essex run the risk of having them crushed by police as the result of new measures introduced recently.

Canvey Wick is a local nature reserve that is home to many of the UK's rarest insect species, but the area is in danger of falling victim to long-term damage as the result of motorcyclists choosing to race there at weekends, reports the Echo.

In a harder line approach to tackling the problem and preserving the local area, the police have said they will now confiscate and crush the motorbikes belonging to anyone discovered racing in the area and there will be no first warnings.

Canvey councillor Dave Blackwell told the paper: "I've been trying to sort out this problem for years and it's good that everyone has finally sat round the table and talked to one another."

Chief inspector Keith Davies, Castle Point district commander, added that the new policy was the result of a long-term plan to help protect the wildlife reserve.

Canvey Pick is owned by supermarket chain Morrisons, wildlife organisation the RSPB and the East of England Developing Agency.

In other news, cancer survivor Rob Edwards plans a charity motorcycle trip around the UK's coastline, reports the Macclesfield Express.
