A new ceramic coating made available by Zircotec could help reduce the risk of burning storage panniers and protective clothing, in news that could interest motorbike insurance customers.

The UK-based company has developed a ceramic thermal coating that can be applied to exhaust pipes using a plasma spray technique and this ensures the outside surface of the pipes stay cool and do not pose a burning threat to storage containers or clothing, reports Gizmag.com.

Zircotec has spent the past few years working primarily with motorsport teams and car manufacturers with the supply of ceramic coatings, but the firm recently spent three months testing the material on a Triumph Tiger 1050 as it plans to expand its operations to cater for the needs of everyday motorcyclists.

The motorbike was kept outside under a cover throughout the three-month test and travelled 5,000 miles, during which time the company says the ceramic coating remained durable and effective throughout a range of weather conditions.

Motorcyclists could also be encouraged to sue the coating as it could enable them to remove the factory heat shields.

In other news, disabled cancer survivor Rob Edwards, 51, has decided to raise money for charity by riding a motorcycle around the UK's coastline for a ten-day period over the Christmas holidays, reports the Macclesfield Express.
