Motorcycles operated by the West Midlands Ambulance Service are among the vehicles that will have a new digital radio system installed, reports the Kidderminster Shuttle.
In news that could interest motorbike insurance customers, the Ambulance Radio Project involves upgrading the service's communication system in order to avoid the failures highlighted by the London Assembly's review in the aftermath of the July 7th London terror attacks in 2005.
The West Midlands Ambulance Service has been using the full digital service for several weeks now and is set to benefit from improve coverage and an encrypted signal.
Barry Thurston, the trust's director of service delivery, told the paper: "Our staff have welcomed and adjusted exceptionally well to the new system which provides major improvements for them and the trust."
Resources across the region, including motorcycles, rapid response cars and ambulances, can now be dispatched by the same controller and more than 800 separate vehicles have been fitted with the equipment.
In other industry news, nearly 112,000 motorcycles have been recalled by iconic manufacturer Harley-Davidson after the company's own tests showed the fuel tanks could leak in the event of a serious crash, reports MotorcycleNews.com.
Customers in the UK who may be affected by the recall are currently being traced.
