Speeding motorcyclists could now be caught more regularly as a next-generation average-speed camera is to be rolled out more widely in news that could interest motorbike insurance customers.
In contrast to conventional average-speed cameras that take photos of vehicles from the front and so are largely unable to identify speeding motorcyclists who only have a number plate above the back wheel, the Specs3 can perform the same task from behind as well.
The camera is already used on many motorways around the UK, but it is now going to be used on more remote road networks and so more perpetrators could be caught.
Speed Check Services, the camera's manufacturer, said on its website: "Specs3 allows a network of cameras to measure the average speed of vehicles between camera locations, covering simple sections of road or area-based networks."
The new technology differs significantly from conventional cameras that measure the time it takes a vehicle to pass between just two units, allowing for only sporadic speed monitoring.
In other news, police in West Lothian have seized ten motorbikes and issued 15 anti-social behavioural orders during a campaign to stop rogue motorcyclists riding in some of the region's top beauty spots, reports the Scotsman.
