A rider who had his motorbike stolen has been told to pay some £160 to have his bike returned to him, after it ended up in a compound, a report states.

According to Essex's local news provider the Echo, Michael Wheatly has been told by the Canute Group to pay £160 to reclaim his motorcycle.

The bike had been stolen from outside his home, but has since been taken to a vehicle pound run by the Canute Group, the paper says.

"I think, as a victim of crime, the way I have been treated is disgusting," Mr Wheatly told the news provider, adding that the Canute Group had written to him once asking for him to sign over ownership of his bike.

But he has refused to do this and since then the company has apparently not replied to any of his contact.

As a result of the theft, the rider has had to turn down work, he said, noting that he could not take up a courier position without the bike and that he cannot afford to replace the machine.
