Motorcycle manufacturer Triumph has highlighted its resilience in the current economic climate by posting increased sales figures.

Bike insurance policyholders may be surprised to read the firm has seen its sales jump by more than a quarter in the last year, selling 7,450 models.

At the end of 2009, the firm had surpassed rival brand Kawasaki to become the fourth largest seller of big bikes in the country.

The rise may in part have been down to the weak pound in relation to the Japanese yen, making the country's models by top brands such as Honda more expensive to buy in the UK.

Paul Stroud, director of global sales and marketing at Triumph, commented: "Our strategy of developing class leading motorcycles and working closely with our dealer partners to deliver a great customer experience is really working and helping to deliver a strong performance globally."

He added that the firm has increased its market share from 3.4 per cent to 4.4 per cent in the last 12 months.

Earlier this month, Triumph announced it will continue to partner the Italian BE1 Racing team in 2010, competing in the Supersport World Championship and working together on a new one-make series utilising the brand's Street Triple R.
