A classic motorcycle could be set to delight bike insurance policyholders with a penchant for antique models when it goes on show in Stafford this April.

The German 1894 Hildebrand & Wolfmuller model, which is thought to be among the world's oldest motorcycles, will be displayed at the Classic Motorcycle Show in spring and will then be put up for auction.

Developed by the brothers Henry and Wilhelm Hildebrand with Alois Wolfmuller and his mechanic Hans Geisenhof, the twin-cylinder, four-stroke vehicle, which is water cooled, has a 1488cc engine and develops 2.5bhp.

Despite the low bhp, the model could achieve speeds of almost 30 miles per hour. It was also the first vehicle to be bestowed with the name motorcycle, or motorrad in German.

It is expected that a keen bike insurance policyholder could pay up to £60,000 for the bike when it goes under the hammer in April.

James Stensel, motorcycle specialist at Bonhams, told the Times the bike is one of the forerunners with regard to motorcycle design.

"To see one in the metal is unbelievable. They are so, so rare," he added.
