The snow may have caused a number of bike insurance claims for motorcyclists recently, but the wintry conditions may have also helped some bikers avoid having to rely on their premiums.

According to the Oxford Times, the snow and ice meant that many criminals such as vehicle thieves were prevented from carrying out their illegal activities.

At the peak of the snowy weather, crime in the county fell by 36 per cent, the publication claims.

Icy roads are likely to have had much to do with a reduction in the number of cars and bikes stolen in the area, even more so as many workers were forced to remain at home until the worst of the weather had passed, meaning fewer empty properties.

"It is also almost impossible to cycle, ride motorbikes or drive cars on the ice and snow, so fewer people have been stealing them," commented detective chief inspector Colin Paine, head of Oxford priority crime.

Speaking to the publication, a 38-year-old reformed thief said: "You're not going to steal a car and definitely not a motorbike because the roads are too icy."

It has been suggested that riders can still enjoy motorcycling during cold weather by investing in heated grips.
