Bike insurance policyholders who are fans of riding champ Valentino Rossi may be excited to read the Fiat Yamaha rider has been nominated for a top sports accolade.

The rider, who scooped his ninth grand prix world title last year, has been put forward for the Laureus World Sports Awards - a premier sporting achievement judged by a jury of 46 top sports experts.

Rossi has been entered into the Sportsman of the Year category at the ceremony but faces stiff competition from Jamaican athlete and 2009 Laureus winner Usain Bolt, who won three gold medals at the last year's Athletics World Championships, as well as tennis ace Roger Federer, who has been a four-time Laureus winner.

Other contenders in the category include FIFA World Footballer of the Year Lionel Messi, cyclist Alberto Contador who won two Tour de France titles in three years and Kenenisa Bekele, who took victory in both the 5,000 and 10,000 metre events of the Athletics World Championships.

Other motoring stars to be nominated for awards this year include Jenson Button in the World Breakthrough category.

"We have had some thrilling world championships this year and a host of terrific individual performances. I congratulate all the nominees and now we look forward to what should be a great awards ceremony," commented academy chairman Edwin Moses.

The overall winner is set to be announced in Abu Dhabi on March 10th.
