Police in Sunderland are carrying out measures that could help local riders avoid bike insurance claims for theft.
The Sunderland Echo reports that officers are looking to reduce motorcycle thefts in the region and are calling upon consumers to play their part.
Figures have shown that 303 bikes were stolen across County Durham last year. According to police, 66 per cent of the vehicles had no form of security.
Durham Constabulary's police constable John Bowman told the publication that most of the vehicles stolen are those mini models owned by young children.
He commented that this year, officers will be working to get the message across that riders need to be careful and use security devices.
"It's simple for criminals to steal bikes and they're generally then ridden round the fields and dumped," the constable said. He added that storing the machines out of view and locking them could help lower the number of bikes that are stolen.
The officer also urged consumers to make a note of the model's engine or RAM number to make them easier to track.
According to government figures, the rate of motorcycle theft fell slightly from 39 per 1,000 in 2001 to 37 per 1,000 in 2003.
