Following publication of a report criticising the implementation of the new motorcycle test, calls have been made for the government to address safety issues surrounding the exam.
Parliament's transport select committee reported that the Driving Standards Agency was slow to respond to the industry's concerns and unjustified in closing many local test centres to replace them with fewer multipurpose facilities.
Commenting on the findings, road safety charity Brake has said ministers need to address safety issues as a matter of urgency as concerns have been voiced that riders have to travel too far and at high speed to get the new test centres.
This could see riders endanger more than their bike insurance premiums as a result.
Cathy Keeler, deputy chief executive of Brake, said it is essential that the new exam encourages riders to put safety first as well as testing their skills.
"Brake supports the committee's calls for the government and motorcycle training industry to work together to ensure that the testing and training regime is effective and helps riders develop the skills, judgment and attitudes that will give them the best chance of survival," she added.
The Motor Cycle Industry Association also welcomed the report, suggesting it vindicates the position the industry has taken towards the test all along.
