Motorcyclists are being advised to take tyre safety seriously this coming Bike Tyre Safety Month.

The month of activity will take place in April and alert riders to the dangers they face on the roads by not checking their wheels.

Figures from the government recently highlighted tyre-related accidents on the roads have increased by 28 per cent in the space of a year, potentially meaning costly bike insurance claims for riders who are not careful.

"The sharp rise in the number of bike accidents being caused by faulty tyres is very worrying and completely unnecessary," comments Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe.

He suggested that tyres are vitally important to road safety, with simple, regular checks helping riders to avoid accidents.

Mr Jackson went on to say that such checks should take place all year round but they may be especially pertinent for those motorcyclists who do not ride their machines regularly.

Earlier this month, the organisation suggested that bikers going for a ride in April may be embarking on the first journey of the season and as such, it is important they check their tyres for damage sustained while the vehicles have been stationary.
