A campaign to get the government to assess problems with the new motorcycle test is gaining pace.

According to website ThisislocalLondon.co.uk, 60 MPs from the UK have pledged their support for St Albans MP Anne Main's campaign for ministers to rethink the new test, which has courted controversy since its inception last year.

As part of the test's introduction, special multipurpose centres were created for candidates to sit the exam, while many small test centres were closed down, meaning bike insurance policyholders had to sometimes travel miles and encounter dangerous roads to take the test.

"The government must 'Think Bike' and take on board the legitimate concerns that riders have about these tests," commented Ms Main.

"We cannot let riders down by asking them to engage in a testing procedure that obviously has major problems."

The MP's comments follow the publication by the Transport Select Committee of a damning report on the implementation of the test.

In the publication the committee said the approach taken to introducing the new exam was slow and dogmatic, while the creation of the new test centres was unfounded and has wasted millions of pounds.
