Motorcyclists are being urged to make extra checks to ensure their wheels are safe during Bike Tyre Safety Month.
With many bike insurance policyholders potentially preparing for their first ride of the year, TyreSafe is urging riders to take their machine for a free exam at various dealerships nationwide participating in the awareness month.
"As the only point of contact with the road it's critical that motorcyclists check that their tyres are in a healthy state before setting off on a ride," explained Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe.
He added that this is even more important at the start of spring, when many machines may have been in storage during the winter months.
Over the colder period, tyres may become prone to cracking and the rubber might deteriorate, which can result in unsafe tyres and ensuing bike insurance claims.
At the start of spring this becomes even more important as bikes can sometimes spend several months in storage over the winter.
According to the organisation, cracking found in the tread and sidewall areas can indicate that tyres have been in heavy use, but rubber deterioration can be a sign of poor winter storage.
Any signs that the faults are present should prompt riders to have their tyres professionally checked.
TyreSafe is currently offering 20 free motorcycle tyre repair kits via a prize draw for riders who sign up for its monthly newsletter.
