With the number of motorcycle registrations dropping in recent months, aftersales are becoming more and more important to dealers, it has been claimed.
Martin Powell, from London based motorcycle dealer Metropolis Motorcycles, told security device maker Tracker that the industry has suffered due to a reduction in sales.
"The last year has hit motorbike dealerships hard because of the fall in sales, so extra revenue made by aftersales is essential," he commented.
During one sale, the dealer advised a customer to fit his new motorcycle with a tracking device, which can help trace the vehicle should it be stolen, potentially helping the rider to avoid bike insurance claims.
Edgar Montez, who spent £10,000 on a brand new Suzuki GSX-1000 K9, was persuaded to install the security measure, which turned out to be an invaluable choice.
Just six months later, the vehicle was stolen from outside Mr Montez's workplace.
Tracker's police relationships manager Stuart Chapman commented that the special VHF-based technology used by the devices is different from GPS signals as it emits a signal even if the machine has been bundled into the back of a van.
According to figures from the government's latest Bike Theft Index, the number of motorcycles stolen rose from 48,412 in 2001 to 50,591 in 2003.
