The 1963 50cc TT winner and Suzuki rider Mitsuo Ito has been immortalised in copper and nickel for a new special edition 50p coin.

To mark the forthcoming 2010 Isle of Man TT races, the island's government has announced a new coin bearing an image of the Japanese rider atop his 50cc Suzuki racer in action at the 1963 event.

With Suzuki celebrating 50 years of international racing in 2010, the coin could prove popular with bike insurance policyholders who root for the Suzuki teams.

Managing director for Suzuki GB Yasuharu Osawa said the firm is delighted to accept the commemorative coin on behalf of the racer.

"He was incredibly touched when we contacted him to tell him the news and is looking forward to receiving the very first coin at his home in Hamamatsu, Japan very shortly," Mr Osawa added.

Fans of the rider might want to make sure they make it to the Isle of Man TT this year to catch a glimpse of Ito, who will be in attendance. The event will run between May 29th and June 11th.

Coins will be available to buy during the TT festivities and will be sold at the island's post offices.
