Concerns over the safety and lawfulness of motorcyclists having to travel long distances to take their test have been raised by experts in Essex.
Instructors in the borough have told the Essex Echo they are worried about riders having to travel to a facility in Basildon since their local Southend test centre was closed when the new exam came into force last year.
Derek Brett, who runs C View Motorcycle Training in Canvey, told the publication there will be riders frustrated because they cannot get a test and they will have to take to the streets without a full licence.
"People end up with a licence full of convictions because of this," he added.
The issue makes the need for a thorough bike insurance policy even more pertinent, as inexperienced riders make their way to far-flung test centres when they may not be ready to pass their exam.
Mr Brett went on to say that learner numbers have dropped dramatically because of the new exam supply being cut.
"Basildon is the main test centre for the south east, but there is only one man there four days a week, so it's ridiculous," he concluded.
A review of the new exam and its implementation by the Transport Committee said earlier this year that millions have been wasted in bringing in the new test.
