Motorcyclists are being warned they are potentially at greater risk of having to make a bike insurance claim during good weather in daylight hours.

The findings from the Institute of Advanced Motorists have been cited by the Post Office, which is reminding riders of the need for a thorough bike insurance policy now that summer is fast approaching.

In its own research, the firm discovered that 13 per cent of vehicle drivers in the UK would think about swapping to a motorcycle if it meant lower costs, equating to almost five million people.

With this in mind, the Post Office warns that increased numbers of bikes on the roads could heighten the need for riders to comply with the law and have their machine covered.

New riders who have recently become bike insurance policyholders will find the levels of cover available to them are similar to those offered to car drivers: third party, theft and fire and fully comprehensive.

Many policies allow riders to cover a number of bikes under one policy and also provide options for insuring their accessories.

Policy prices will vary depending on the type of bike ridden and the owner's level of experience.
